Breaking new ground.
August 23, 2026 marks the groundbreaking on the largest building expansion in Shearer's 138-year history. A new sanctuary, additional classroom and fellowship space, and room to serve a growing Lake Norman congregation.
The need.
Mooresville and the Lake Norman area have grown significantly over the past three decades. The current sanctuary, built in the 1950s, has served the congregation well for seventy-plus years, but it was designed for a smaller town and a smaller church.
Today's Sunday services, Sunday School classes, children's programs, and midweek ministries use every available room in the current campus. We regularly turn down community requests to use our facilities because we have no open space. Weddings and funerals compete for the same calendar.
The new building addresses this. More room for worship, more rooms for discipleship, more space to serve.
What's being built.
The project includes a new sanctuary larger than the current one, additional classroom space for Sunday School and AWANA, a larger fellowship hall for congregational meals and community events, and modern audio-visual infrastructure for livestreaming and midweek use.
The design, by Design Associates Inc., preserves the aesthetic character of the current red brick sanctuary while adding modern functionality. The current building is not being demolished; it is being supplemented.
Rendering and detailed design information is available on request from the building committee. Email the church office.
What happens when.
August 23, 2026: Groundbreaking ceremony. All members and the public are invited.
Fall 2026 through 2027: Construction. The congregation continues to worship in the current sanctuary throughout.
2028 (projected): Completion and dedication of the new building.
Timeline is subject to construction progress and permitting. Updates will be published here as the project advances.
How this is being funded.
The project is being funded through a capital campaign of pledges and gifts from the Shearer congregation and friends of the church. We are grateful for every gift of every size.
If you want to support the build, you can give online through our regular giving platform (noting your gift is for the Capital Campaign), by mailing a check marked "Building Fund" to the church office, or by contacting the finance team for information about planned gifts, stock transfers, or qualified charitable distributions.
Every dollar of capital-campaign giving goes to construction and furnishing of the new facility. Operations and ongoing ministries continue to be funded by regular tithes and offerings.
August 23, 2026.

The mission does not change.
A new building is a tool, not the mission. The mission is the same gospel preached on Presbyterian Road since 1888. Come worship with us on a Sunday morning.
